In April 2007 after just turning 40, Lou Hartley was diagnosed with breastcancer. Her sister-in-law, Ali, also had the disease at age 33. They’re proof that the disease is striking women at a much earlier age and both women were determined to raise awareness of this and raise money for cancer charities.
Lou’s exciting journey
Since her diagnosis, Lou has written an online diary and run the 2007 Robin Hood Marathon, raising £700 for breast cancer charities. Now she’s off on a motorbike tour across Europe. It’s no mean feat especially as she’s a petite 5’ 2’’ tall and 6 months ago, she hadn't even passed her test! Since then she’s braved the rain, hail and snow and given up her weekends learning to ride thanks to the patient instructors at Shires Motorcycle School Ltd. Even better, she’s now having advanced training from the Nottingham Advanced Motorcyclists.
Lou sets off at 4pm on 19 July from Nottingham’s Market Square
Lou and BreastQuest’s professional photographer, Tristan Poyser are setting off on a three-week tour of Europe by motorbike to raise money for charity. The trip will kick off in the Market Square, Nottingham on Saturday 19 July at 4pm. Lou and Tristan will be waved off by the Lord Mayor and accompanied by the Nottingham Advanced Motorcyclists. And they’ll be making a video documentary of the trip with blogs, photos and podcasts en route.

Channel 4 are looking for successful career women who date younger men, for an intelligent and sensitive documentary about 21st Century relationships and have asked Smart Women to help. The film will consider the rapid decline of the taboo around the ‘older woman/ younger man’ relationship dynamic. We seem to be on a cusp of a big shift in attitude where this partnership is becoming positively aspirational, helped by an increasing number of high profile celebrity relationships.
They are looking for high-achieving career women, in their mid to late thirties plus, who have chosen to have relationships with men at least ten years younger. Greater equality in the world of work means women are no longer so dependent on men for financial security and social status. For centuries men have had younger girlfriends impressed by their power and life experience. But today women have more freedom to seek the relationship that’s right for them rather than be hidebound by tradition so Channel 4 are looking for people who are forging the way here and feel strongly enough about it to talk openly.
Please call 020 8877 5601 or email sally.hewitt@prospect-uk.com. The dealine is tight so it would be great to hear from you by 3rd March if possible.

But right now you can help in some smart but simple ways...

When women set up in business, they are often doing so whilst juggling many other responsibilities and this has an impact on such things as how long it takes them to get started and what resources they have at their disposal.
It's an area of enterprise that warrants more understanding which is why Smart Women is encouraging members to help the Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative to put together a discussion group to explore the issues that women face.
The discussion group will take place over lunch on Tuesday 30th October at a venue in Nottingham city centre. If you'd like to take part, please contact Caroline Missing at Strategia Ltd., who are undertaking this research, on 0845 2261712 or caroline@stratagia.co.uk.
